Many come to Phuket to enjoy the cooler temperatures and the drier conditions of the high season between November and mid-April. The high season is a great time to visit the Land of Smiles by all means. The water is warm, smooth and clear; perfect conditions for snorkeling and scuba diving. Plus, there’s less chance you’ll get caught in a torrential rainstorm when trying to get back home after a late night out.

During the low season, Phuket is much less crowded and prices for accommodation can be half the cost. It’s true that swimming off the west coast of Phuket can be more dangerous because of strong rip currents and up to 2-meter waves, but these conditions are ideal for surfers. So, the waves aren’t quite as big as ones found at the Banzai Pipeline or Mavericks, but Phuket’s reputation as a surfing destination has been on the rise over the past few years with more and more surf shops sprouting up all over the island. The moderately-sized beach breaks and wind-protected coves make this an ideal place to paddle out for the first time. All shapes and sizes of surf boards can be rented at most beaches, including Patong beach, as well as neighboring beaches, Kata, Karon and Surin, which are less than 20 minutes from our training center in Patong, Phuket. Rates range from 150 baht per hour to about 500 baht per day. Body boards, also available, have a much easier learning curve and are another popular option for those seeking more immediate wave-riding gratification.

Toward late August to early September, Phuket is host to local and international surf competitions. Crowds gather on the beaches of Kalim and Kata to see some of the world’s top riders which always make it look so easy.

If you’re thinking about coming to Phuket to learn Thai, German or Japanese, or to take the TEFL Plus teacher training program, don’t forget about all of the advantages to coming during the low season. The low season means less people, lower prices and higher waves. You can learn to teach English with our four-week advancedTEFL course and learn to surf on the beautiful beaches of Phuket, Thailand!
